Even in one of the top beach destinations in the Southeast, what many visitors love about Gulf Shores and Orange Beach is the small-town feeling still so predominant here. Nowhere is it more prevalent than at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo. Known nationally as “the little zoo that could” for its triumph over natural disaster, this 17-acre park allows visitors to enjoy a small-zoo experience and big-time fun.

Up-close encounters with some of the zoo’s most popular residents add even more excitement to the personal experience visitors enjoy here. The following animal encounters are offered seasonally for an additional ticket price, with no advance reservation required.

Enjoy a hopping good time with a Kangaroo Encounter. As the young red kangaroos grow and start to explore outside their mom’s pouch, you can pet them and coax the joeys into posing for pictures.

Lemur Encounters offer a rare opportunity to hold and cuddle with young lemurs. That is, if they choose to stop swinging from the rafters and leaping on your head! This encounter includes playtime with young red-ruffed and black-and-white lemurs in a shaded, screened enclosure.

On a tour of the Reptile Garden, animal handlers dish the real dirt on a variety of lizards, turtles, gators and more. Learn about reptiles of all kinds, and hold a baby alligator or even an anaconda, if you dare.

Don’t expect a whole lot of action at the Sloth Encounter, but what an experience it is! Go right up to these slow, sleepy mammals and learn about their preferred habitats, daily movements and diets.

Add a trip to the zoo to your next beach vacation. Make your reservations now and get ready for some exciting close encounters.
